Want to know what to do in the event of a medical emergency?

This first aid course provides the training and practical skills required to calmly know what to do in the event of an emergency. Gain the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid for life-threatening injuries and illnesses in the home or workplace, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

DELIVERY METHOD:

This is a blended course with self-paced online learning (e-Learning) and face-to-face training. Before attending the face-to-face training, you will need to complete the e-Learning which can be done in one sitting or over several sessions. Depending on your learning ability, you should allow up to 8 hours for reading and e-Learning. Face-to-face training and assessment takes approximately 7 hours in a classroom environment (9:00am to 4:00pm).

REQUIREMENTS:

You are required to pay $80 up front to enrol, with the remainder due no later than the day of training.

As part of the First Aid course, you are required to complete online pre-learning activities at least 24 hours prior to your class date. These activities are completed via our online Moodle, and students should allow up to 8 hours to complete the required readings and knowledge quizzes. Students will need to provide a current email address on enrolment to receive their Yarrawonga Mulwala Community and Learning Centre Moodle login instructions.

COURSE CONTENT:

In this course, you will learn the skills and knowledge to be able to provide first aid response and life support, manage casualties, the incident, and other first aiders, until qualified emergency help arrives at the scene of the incident.

This course covers how to:

  • Recognise and assess an emergency situation
  • Ensure safety for yourself, bystanders and the casualty
  • Seek assistance from emergency services
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines
  • Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
  • Manage the casualty in a respectful manner
  • Obtain consent from the casualty (where possible)
  • Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
  • Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions
  • Monitor the condition of the casualty and respond in accordance with first aid principles
  • Accurately convey details of the incident to emergency services
  • Report details of incidents in line with your workplace or site procedures
  • Complete workplace or site documentation, including incident report forms
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information
  • Recognise the possible psychological impacts on yourself and other rescuers and seek help when required
  • Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required

ASSESSMENT:

Written, practical and scenario-based assessment

Please note:  It is a requirement of this course that practical demonstration of CPR must be performed on an adult and child resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, and an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.

It is recommended that students wear loose fitting clothing on the day of their practical assessment.

CERTIFICATION:

By successfully completing this course you will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for:

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid valid for 36 months (3 years) from the date of course completion
  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation valid for 12 months from the date of course completion

It is recommended by the ARC that first aid skills be renewed every 3 years and CPR be undertaken every 12 months.
