The Skills for Work and Study program is designed to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of students and to strengthen pathway outcomes by building the skills and capabilities necessary to participate in entry level employment in the Health sector.

PATHWAYS:

Pathway planning is embedded in the final stages of the course and pathways information support provided by the VET teacher in the last session.

A healthcare guest speaker and a tour of a healthcare service will provide an understanding of the pathways and job roles.

COURSE CONTENT:

This pre-accredited course aims to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of learners not engaged in work or study. The course focuses on developing skills in learning, speaking, listening, reading, writing and numeracy whilst drawing on subject matter and materials from the healthcare sector.

Topics delivered in the course include but are not limited to:

  • An introduction to the healthcare sector and entry level jobs
  • Learning pathways and goals in healthcare
  • Code of conduct in healthcare, duty of care and confidentiality requirements
  • Communication skills including working with people from diverse backgrounds and providing customer service
  • Hygiene and infection control
  • Participate in workplace health and safety

Learners will experience a positive learning environment to improve their confidence in learning. Participation will also enhance learners’ employability skills through individual and group activities and online research requiring the development of intuitive skills, collaboration, planning, and problem solving.

Activities include guest speakers from the healthcare industry and a tour of a healthcare service to assist learners further understand pathways and job roles and consolidate learning.

Learning and employment goals are established and reviewed with close support of the trainer.

ASSESSMENT:

An initial Language, Literacy, and Numeracy assessment will be conducted at the enrolment stage of this course to determine the learner’s operating level.

There is no formal written assessment for this course.

Learners complete a pre- and post-program learner survey to self-assess their knowledge, skills and confidence levels

CERTIFICATION:

A “Certificate of Participation” is issued upon completion of this course.
